About

I’m Tijl Degroote, a ...-year-old with Flemish roots, currently pursuing a PhD in Physics at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Thomas Ihn in the Nanophysics Group. I focus on bilayer graphene systems as a possible qubit platform. I’m passionate about fundamental quantum physics and nanoscience, and I generally take a deep interest in technology.

I obtained my Master’s degree from Delft University of Technology. I completed my thesis at QuTech in the lab of Dr. Srijit Goswami. My work involved reflectometry measurements in 2DEG semiconductor-superconductor hybrid (Majorana) devices. To complement this experience, I undertook an internship in industry at deep-tech start-up Diamfab. Later, I joined the Quantum Photon Science group at the Paul Scherrer Institute for a research internship, concluding my honours program at TU Delft.

Outside of academia, I enjoy cooking, travelling and EVs. I’m also an all-genre music enthousiast and hold a higher degree in piano.

Project Portfolio

Some of the projects I have realised:

Research Project PSI

Research project in the Quantum Photon Science group of Dr. Simon Gerber at the Paul Scherrer Institute, as part of the Honours Program at TU Delft, focussed on improving coherent control of Rydberg states in silicon.

More information

Master Thesis

Master Thesis research project at QuTech, Qubit Research Division, in the group of Dr. Srijit Goswami, focusing on reflectometry measurements of 2DEG semiconductor-superconductor hybrid devices.

Quantum Information Project - QuTech/TU Delft

The implementation of two distance-three subspace quantum error correction codes using Qiskit to compare their performances with a self-constructed error model and correction algorithm with Pauli frames and a decoder. Together with Thomas Van Caekenberghe and Lennert Quanjel, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Leonardo DiCarlo.

Bachelor Thesis

The in-house developed plasma chamber setup has been adapted to perform DC gas discharge experiments in conditions similar to Earth and Mars like atmospheres and reveals Paschen curves. A safe lower breakdown limit is concluded for space probe Daedalus.

Plasma reactor

High voltage, high vacuum, DC plasma reactor for Hasselt University’s PhysXLab. Together with fellow student, Miquel Hillen, I got the opportunity to design and construct this plasma reactor. This project is currently on display at Hasselt University.
